Is there any car you came close to buying but didn’t, that you wish you could go back and buy?
For me its the 87 Conquest I didn’t buy about a month ago. I didn’t buy it because realistically was just a bit out of my budget. I had 3800 to buy a car, the seller wouldn’t let it go for any less than that 3800. So yeah I could have bought it, but could I afford to then maintain it? Maybe not, that maybe made me walk away. Plus I would have needed to buy something to drive through the winter/any time the Conquistador was down for maintenance so there’s another cost. But I feel I will always look back and think “I should have just done it.” It was one of the most fun cars I’ve actually driven(that turbo choo), I loved the quirky 80’sness of it, and I loooove the way they look. I shed a tear thinking of it now.
that interior tho. Oh and it had auto climate control, in an 87.
So what’s your “I should have bought that.” car.
Side note I’m kinda thinking about buying a Bronco II for like 700 bucks(so yeah might be getting a winter beater anyway), more on that latter...

The one I most regret is not getting a 200sx because the one I found locally was a manual and that would have meant I’d learn to drive manual almost 10 years earlier!

Sort of, it’s a strange case.
‘70 Charger R/T for $7000. Complete but pretty bombed out.
At the time I could have bought it, restored it, and sold it for a good profit a few years later, but if the same car came up now I wouldn’t do it.

When I bought a new Civic back in 08, I contemplated going all in and getting an Si. But I was still in college and went with the sensible LX. 6 months later I got a big promotion at work and could have easily afforded the heavier payment.

Back in high school I found a 66 or 67 mustang fastback for $2500(?). 289 with a manual transmission. It was a little rough but not terrible.
I haven't looked in a long time but it seems finding a non Swiss cheese body no drivetrain 60s fastback under $10k is impossible

Try finding one for under £15,000 in good condition.

About 15 years ago I ran into someone selling a clean and rust-free yet high-mileage Audi ur-Quattro for $3000. Didn’t have the money on hand but I could’ve borrowed it and had it paid back within a month, but I didn’t want to inconvenience anyone. Still kicking myself for that one.

Let’s see, there was the 85 FB GSL Targa I was offered for $500, the MCSS, the MCLS, the MGB, the $1000 MG Midget, the $800 Pinto wagon, the roller rat rod, the $1000 68 Impala roller, and many more that I can’t immediately think of.

Damn, where do I start...
When the time came to get my very first car, my dad helped me by basically doubling what money I had (yeah, spoiled, I know). On our way to the dealerships, we saw a beautiful Dodge Stealth RT on the side of the road for sale. called the guy, asked for an appointment, Dad was down with it, price was within budget.
Owner calls back, says he can’t come because he’s going hunting, will be back in a week. I needed a car in the next 3 days, so we had to pass. I ended up getting a 4-door Pontiac Sunfire. (still a good car for a teenager, learned to drive stick in it, and it was faster than my friend’s Civics and Corollas) Everytime I see a red Stealth, I long for the one that got away from me.
Then, there was the ‘67 Ford Galaxie 500. About 5 years ago, I came across a project car that was 80% done. It had a cop car engine, 4-speed manual transmission, large rear tires, limited slip diff, redone interior... pretty cheap too, as the guy had to leave country in a hurry... It only needed sanding and painting (even the bondo was done), but I didn’t know anything about paint and I was looking for something cheap to run, so I had to pass on it. I still remember the bass tone and the vibrations of the engine as I started it up.
And now I’m off to Kijiji to look for a new project car.

In 2007 I almost bought a 1990 Skyline GTS-T Type M in MINT condition 100% stock with only 18,000 fully documented kms for $11,000.00. I still kick myself for not buying it. 2 months later I bought a 1990 Fairlady Z Twin Turbo 5spd instead.

Oh, so many, this is going to hurt. Where to begin...
‘64 Lotus Cortina, in pieces in about 1995, $600. Bought my first car, a rusty BMW 1600, for $600 instead.
‘73 911 sunroof coupe, sorted mechanicals but needed paint, $12k in about 2004.
‘89 BMW M3, white/red, rough but solid runner, $7k in 2005.
‘86 BMW 635csi, really nice gray market Euro model, $5k.
Lotus Europa, black, pretty nice, $11k about 12 years ago.
‘73 Porsche 914, rough cosmetics but good runner, $1500 from a buddy.
Bay window ‘68ish VW Doka, sorted for $12k.
‘72 BMW Bavaria, $4k about 8 months ago.
MBZ 190SL, $8k in late 90’s. I don’t like them at all, but could have made good money on it.
More than one Porsche 944 that could’ve been had for a song.
‘84 911 Carrera, rough cosmetics but good mechanically, $14k about 5 years ago.
Goliath Empress, running, $1200 last year. Mostly regret this one because it would have made a great parts car for 505Turbeaux’s wagon.
Renault Encore hatchback (I know, terrible), mint condition, low mileage old lady car, $2k last year.
MBZ 190E 16V, $3k
MkII VW GTI $700
BMW E30 325is, $1200
‘63 Bug sliding ragtop, needed assembly but with restored pan, $1500
And many more...
On the other hand, there are many cars that I have been lucky enough to jump on, so it could be worse. What bugs me about this list is that basically my stubborn love for my old ‘83 Ur-quattro led me to hang on to it for far too long instead of experiencing several other great cars, many of which I could have not only enjoyed, but made money on to move into something else. Oh well.

I had an Alpine White one for 13 years and loved it. As I mentioned in my own regret post, that car is what kept me from owning several others.

Had about $5200 to spend on a car and had my heart set on a 300zx N/A for roughly $4000 and change. I had a friend who owned a ZX for a year or so and always said how much he loved it but how maintenance was a little bit expensive. Ended up being afraid of buying it seeing how I have zero self control when it comes to beating on a car like that and throwing money at parts.
Bought a TL-S instead, cry on the inside every time a 300zx drives me

Welcome to that club. I could have had a ‘78 GTS, owned by a family friend, that had been sitting on stands for about 10 years for less than $25k. More dollars than I could do at the time in my 20’s.

I would buy a Starion if it presented itself. I bought my 240z and even though I wasn’t totally ready for the project at the time I knew an early, pretty rust free 240 with matching engine and original paint was probably not going to come along very often so I got it and have worked on it in phases that make sense. But I can’t say I regret anything because I wasn’t in a position to buy anything I wanted before that.

Probably for the best on the Conquest deal unless you’re very mechanically & electrically inclined. There’s little to no aftermarket support and OEM parts are starting to run out so modifying and fabricating your own is becoming the norm. The forums will be your church and the factory service manual, your bible. They are not for the feint of heart when it comes to maintenance.
With that said, I can guarantee it’ll be the most fun car you’ll ever own. I’ve owned two in the last ten years and everytime I get behind the wheel of one I’m reminded of all the wonderful memories I have of melting rubber and traveling across the United States to meet other members, being sure to leave a pair of 11’s everywhere I went. They become an extension of your being and the control becomes intuitive. The way they shift, the accelerate under boost, brake, yaw and respond will become sub-conscious, like breathing, and your body will mold into vehicle and your loins will explode with happiness.
The best recommendation I can make is DO YOUR RESEARCH. Spend a lot of time in the FAQ sections of starquestclub.com & 26liter.us and learn the common faults and how to fix them. It’ll be instrumental when you’re in a parking lot in Wendover, UT with a dead alternator and no one can get one for two days. You’ll find a junkyard in a guy’s backyard who took $40 from you with the agreement that “you can look back there for what you need, but if you don’t find it, I keep the money,” where you’ll find an oil soaked alternator in an ‘83 Mitsubishi Sapporo with a different plug. Using a fridge door and some spare wheels you’ll wedge them under the chassis, bracing it on the hill, pull the black tar coated unit from the rare chassis and say a prayer to the car gods that it still works. Back at your SQ, you’ll make a jumper harness with the knowledge of what terminals D and R, are; plug it in, put on the belt and push start it in reverse out the spot where you’ll be rewarded with a voltage gauge pointed at 14V and a sigh of relief passes over you. You grab your father from the bench, interrupting his conversation with the shady hungover co-ed who was dropped off by the police 6 hours before, and finish your drive to Reno, NV where you’re scheduled to start your new job the next day.

My dad’s 1992 Dakota. The first and only vehicle he ever bought brand new. I learned to drive in that truck. It ran like a champ the day he sold it, and still does from what he’s heard from the new owner (a friend of his). I didn’t know he even wanted to sell it, but I should’ve made an offer the day i found out. Waited a week, and it was gone.
I stole this pic from google; his was similar to this, only his was a V6, and his didn’t have the bed cap and tiedowns on the outside. Apparently, the white-over-gray color scheme was pretty rare. The only modifications he made to it were larger tires and some tiedowns inside the bed.

Just a few years ago (like 5) you could get a well-kept, up to date maintenance, 80s Testarossa for <$75k. Maybe even closer to $50k if you looked for a deal. I saw some for sale, and thought about it, and should have bought one. They are $100k or so now.
A 2006 Ford GT is also on the list. When they were new there was a time when there were plenty at dealers and you could buy them at a discount to MSRP. I thought about it at the time, and figured that’s crazy - they will depreciate like every other new high end sports car. Nope, should have bought one then.
